The Dragon was originally designed by Norwegian Johan Anker in 1929. He was an Olympic gold-medalist sailor. Only a few years after its introduction, the Dragon had achieved massive popularity throughout Europe. It wasn’t long before the best sailors in the world found their way to this exciting, high-performance yacht.
In 1948, the Dragon was chosen to be an Olympic boat, which it remained until 1972. Since then, the Dragon has grown into a strong international class of racing boat. Each year, more than 100 participants take part in several dedicated races throughout the world, including the famous Gold Cup race.
Today, there are more than 25 countries racing Dragons and more than 1500 registered boats in the International Dragon Association (IDA). You can read more about the Dragon’s history on the official international Dragon website.
